Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
There's a Roma gypsy type who sells the Big Issue on the High Street. Must do OK out of it 'cos she has been there for years.

I thought when the Big Issue started it was supposed to help people for a bit to give them a life up not be a lifestyle choice.

Feel sorry for the mentally ill and substance dependent ones for about 10 seconds and then go on my way. It's a shit old world, still could be worse, in India millions start life on the pavement and never have the chance to escape it unlike the homeless here, many of whom end up on shit street through unfortunate circumstances which have often befallen them because they made some pretty shit choices at crucial crossroads in their lives.

Poor buggers. Tough shit.

I see the chief executive of Shelter is on 122K per annum.

That is the definition of 'fucking taking the piss.'

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
1) They are human beings
2) If I have extra change not over a pound sometimes I oblige.

I cannot believe that some talk about these people as if they are animals yes some are doing it to make money or for drugs which is wrong but there are many who are in great difficulty and do it just to survive.

It is difficult to tell the professionals from the real ones

The one outside of Fenchurch Street is a professional, you know, the one who sits near the HSBC cash points and looks like the one out of Stereo Mcs. He packs up his lino at around 7 and heads into the station to commute home.

Someone mentioned cashless before. Was outside a coffee shop off Charlotte Street in August. Homeless fella walks past asking for change. As per I said I've got no cash. He pulled out one of those contactless machines from his Tesco bag. I was gobsmacked. I doubt it worked but was fucking genius. Got the bird I was with to lend me a quid for his sheer timing, fucking brilliant

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
I've actually volunteered and gone out with my friend who works helping the homeless in London.
I initially wanted to do some dark b&w photography but ended up just talking to the homeless instead.
It's a proper minefield though as most don't want help, one rasta bloke came out with an amazing story just so he could spend one more night under a bridge near Peckham.
Most have stories of sexual abuse or mental issues along with drugs etc
Some actually earn a decent wage begging, theres tales of pimps, councils stealing their gear etc
I was meant to go out last week but I've been ill so will hopefully be back out in the next couple of weeks as my mates leaving where he works.
Last time i got in it was around -3C

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
Nice one Def, I know a few people who have done similar working in soups kitchens, giving out unsold food for pret a manger. Hope to do this at some point. I do give to homeless but when they pester you gets you thinking some want it for drugs or drink. One bloke always has a can in his hand and it was freezing so went and bought him soup and bread and he turned it down wanted hard cash. Another pestered me and I said sorry no change and he went into a rant told me to fuck off and such like.

Still there are many genuine, have had my ups and downs like many, know too well it is a fine line, anyone of us could end up on the street if conditions conspired to facilitate it.

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
The guy in Romford who I've helped out few times recently, isn't near the station, isn't aggressive, and seems genuine to me. As others have said, getting them food is more helpful and weeds out the drug takers, but there's no shops nearby this particular guy.

The ones who passively aggressively say "you have a good day" etc when you don't help them out piss me off. It's not my fault you've ended up where you are.

Blunders....

Possibly the same bloke who i always have a chat to/give food to. Sits outside tesco Express, often with his dog? Genuine bloke down on his luck. Think he appreciates people talking to him more than anything else.

I often ask if he needs anything when i go in tesco and to be fair to him, he often says no he is fine.

Never give cash though, just the way i am , dont think cash is the right yhing to do...food yes.

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
I don't, only because so many of them aren't genuine.

My mate organised free hair cuts for the homeless, him and the other 3 boys in his shop went into town every second Friday with a load of soup and sambos and cut their barnets. Then a load of fucking Romanian gypsies started showing up so he just scrapped it.

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
My Mrs buys them food, gets dog food too for their muts

I take a slightly different view, if I am out pouring alcohol down my neck and eating what I want, if some poor fucker stuffed in a shopfront wants a fix or a pie who am I to judge, if it gets them through the night then fair play, whatever

As I said, there are plenty of really sad stories within the fraternity, ex servicemen a plenty, my politics are to the right so no screaming lefty here but I know for an absolute fact that the system does not catch them all

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
Havn't given a penny for years now, most although not all aren't genuine and ever since I had the rumour confirmed about the beggar in Mayfair that takes credit card donations on a hand held terminal my change is going in a biscuit tin for a rainy day.

Saw a Big Issue seller in Upminster today - outside the newsagent opposite Costa. Behind her Big Issues she was holding a tablet, about the size of an iPad mini.

I must have bought Buster about 10 pints over the past couple of seasons, so guilty as charged.

I was chatting tô a beggar in manchester once. He pointed out a bloke down the Road on crutches who seemed to be getting a lot of luck outside a pub. Said he drives home in a 4x4 after 'work'. Also told me to check peoples hands. Proper homeless people have dirty hands, fakers dont.

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
Better to find your nearest homeless shelter (often in a church hall after it's daytime use has finished) and give the money directly to them - they'll spend it on food for the people in the shelter that night - a few quid allows them to vary the menu and is often appreciated more than they show.

The support teams have generally vetted the people staying at the shelters (which are often, but not always, drink & drug free zones), so the money don't go on whizz.
